Mira Putnam’s work is a convergence of narratives. Through rice paper, recycled plastic, watermelon seeds, found imagery, gouache, and watercolor, she explores the intricate relationships between cartography, history, time, and space.
At its core, Putnam’s work challenges the conventional understanding of time as linear and instead embraces its layered nature. Inspired by the ancient mosaics of Pompeii and the intricate motifs of the ancient water town Zhujiajiao, where histories and stories are buried beneath each intricate tile and each stone-carved waterway, the layers are depicted metaphorically. The mosaic’s tessellated patterns intertwine with a modern color system, creating a visual dialogue that blurs temporal boundaries.
The weaving motif within Putnam’s artwork stands in for the interconnectedness and the palimpsest of time—where cities are built upon cities and archaeological discoveries reveal floors beneath floors. Through a unique blend of traditional and street techniques, Redz pieces challenge viewers to contemplate questions about self-identity, leaving other concerns in the background, His narrative is rich in reflections, comparisons, and metaphorical symmetry, inviting audiences to engage with his art on a deeper level.
