About the Artist

www.linyuaner.com
I am a curious flâneur, and I make site-specific work. The desire to travel and experience new sensations is in my bones. My medium is myself – I go to a place, walk around, observe, draw connections in my head, process feelings, and interact with local people and non-people. My working process is spontaneous. I don’t plan – things unfold. There is no beginning nor end to my train of thought.
I use locally accessible materials to make drawings, impressions, kinetic sculptures, sound installations, and performances, where people can physically touch the work and be in it. The experience of human connection, be it joyful, depressing, or absurd, seems to be able to justify my art-making as well as my existence in this world. I despise the inane distance between the audience and elitist art. I believe art is in everyday life and IS everyday life. I want to share this view about art through my work. And my whole life is the artwork that I have to work on.

The Translation Project
2017

My American friend Arlyce wrote a poem about love, and we asked our friends and family to translate it into 20 different languages by handwriting. And then we asked the translators to ask their friends and family to “re-translate” the poems back into English.
For the presentation of the project, I made 50 envelopes, each with two smaller envelopes in it, and gave them to the audience members.  The outermost envelope (top left) is an epigraph composed of the names of translators and their loved ones. The second envelope (top right) includes a chart about the recurring and loss of words in the “re-translations” back into English. The innermost envelope (bottom) is sealed with wax. I copied the translations without ink. People can choose to break the seal or not. They touch the words, instead of being able to read them.

Souvenir Museum
2019

Gorna Lipnitsa was unlike anywhere I had been before. I really liked it there. So I thought, why not make a museum of souvenirs for the local people as my parting gift? I did drawings and carvings of what I found unique: a jar from the host family’s chapel, trash cans in ice cream cone shapes, doors for charcoal storage, the annual battle play, a crocodile-shaped bench, etc. On the day of the exhibition, I asked the visitors (locals and summer travelers) to each take home a piece of souvenir that they liked.

The Wacky Tour
2022

During my residency in Porto, I was introduced to Guruwalk by a fellow resident and attended three walking tours in Portugal. On the day of the open studio, I became a tour guide as well and introduced the visitors to the house we had been living in for a month – a semi-typical house in the center of Porto, roof falling, floors tilting, gas running out, shower with a flashlight, and the best part – a portrait staring at you while you are on the toilet.

Curiosity Cabinet
2022

I took a lot of walks during my time in the countryside of west Latvia. During the walks, I would take pictures, sing, take a seat on a rock, read books, and pick up and study objects that I find interesting on the way. The objects that I collected include: leftover wood pieces with wormholes, deer bone in the woods, horse bone on the window sill of the owner’s work hut, charcoal from the wood that we burned for the stone planting ceremony, shoe soles from supposedly German troops who occupied the area, gas can which used to be Chinese almond milk can painted over with black paint, roof material from the old manor house, wreath on Japanese wood Jizo sculpture in the kitchen, branch with fancy mosses, feathers from local birds, brick for grinding stones.

Stone Feast
2022

During my residency in Pedvāle, the founder Ojars worked daily on stone sculptures in the yard, and there were piles and piles of chiseled rocks on the ground. Connecting this observation with the two formal gallery openings I attended in Latvia, I picked out pieces from the rock piles and prepared a feast for the opening of my end-of-residency exhibition.

Musick for a While
2022

During the hour-long walks in the mountains, I picked up some very nice trash from the side of the road. I gathered them in my studio and thought maybe they wanted to talk to each other. And one way to have the objects interact is to make kinetic sculptures. At that time I was fascinated by the aria “Musick for a While” from Henry Purcell’s Oedipus (1692), in which priests are summoning ghosts. So I decided to make a puppet theater or circus, or amusement park, where I connect myself with the objects while singing the aria.
