 Caution! This Is An Exhibition

Opening: 4 PM ,Dec. 12th

Introduction

“Caution!” signifies that something has happened or is about to happen, while “This is an exhibition” identifies the eventful character of a place – an exhibition, a place requiring your attention, a place where something is happening. Attention is “a general and unconditioned power” that produces nothing but actively constitutes a new object. To pay attention means that I have a body, I inhabit the world and my consciousness is open to it. Caution is the explicit way in which I communicate with the world. It is the subject and content of the exhibition, an artwork that can only be established when a visitor walks in.

The exhibition brings traffic facilities into the gallery from the scenes of day-to-day living, they are the visual and functional product of “Caution,” specifying a mode of communication between body and space. Through installation and performance, the artist seeks to create an invalid space with the visitor. Exploring the relationship between body, space, place, event and the unconscious. Space is no longer a container, but can be understood as a gesture, an event, an activity.

The work Exhibition Area, Do Not Occupy removes the functionality of the gallery for exhibition purposes, making it a site that can be used for anything but exhibition during the exhibition; the work Detour occupies an area with barriers in which no event occurs but you can only walk around it; Chi Chi Chi Chi Chu Chi Chi Chu Chu, Warning! There Are Warnings Above and Below, and A Gesture, a Site break the fixed pattern of communication between body and space; How to Create an Invalid Space is a performance art that requires visitors to participate. On the opening day, visitors are asked to pick a warning sign and post it somewhere in the gallery, invalidating it from the original spatial rules and guidance information.

About the Artist

Mingyi Wang is a Ph.D. candidate in Fine Art at the University of Brighton, she graduated from Glasgow School of Art as a postgraduate and now lives and works in London. Her works are based on drawings, installations, and practical projects, exploring approaches to visualizing unconscious space through creative practice. She focuses on the application of phenomenology, psychoanalysis, and non-representational theory in practice, exploring the unconscious communication between body and space in day-to-day living.

Her work emphasizes process and participation, and the de-everydayness of familiar scenes. Everydayness is nothing more than the collective repetition of an experience that takes something for granted, an ordered collectivity that is factual rather than real. De-everydayness can be used as a practical method to reconsider the relationship between body and space. The boundaries of space are no longer physical boundaries but perceptual, motor, conscious, and unconscious boundaries.

 Instructions for Participation

1. Please come to Untitled Space before 5 pm on 12 December 2021.

2. Please pick a warning sign at the entrance of the gallery.

3. Please post the warning sign in a suitable place in the gallery (e.g. walls, floors, ceilings, objects, exhibits, people), invalidating its original meaning and thus creating an absurd, invalid space (e.g. post the “Caution Wet Floor” on the ceiling).

4. Use facilities such as ladders if necessary.

5. Why do you post it here? Sharing your ideas with others.

6. The process will be monitored and filmed.

The infrared thermometer implies gestures and spatial rules. When you see it, it means that you need to make a specific gesture (e.g. raise your wrist) to enter a specific place (a place where temperature measuring is required). In this exhibition, the infrared thermometer is fixed to a very high wall, where no one can reach it. It warns the visitor that this is a place that requires measurement, but you cannot interact with it.

When we encounter an obstacle, we know that we should immediately stop or go around it without a complex reasoning process; the body unconsciously adapts to an agreed-upon spatial rule. Through emphasizing the presence of obstacles, the absence of events, the impossibility of interaction, this exhibition exposes the body as a background, unconscious, pre-reflective, and habitual.
