前言 Introduction
谈拉丁本次在上海的驻地创作根源于他对家族历史的好奇,他以盘谷银行1917年的火灾为起始,试图理清过去与此刻在何种程度上交织在一起。盘谷银行由太平洋战争后的在泰华商创立,它的发展轨迹连接了三个亚洲国家,中国、泰国和日本:二战期间日本占领泰国,驱逐了外商,又由于太平洋战争落败,日本撤出了对泰国的占领,于是泰国本地银行借机开始出现,这和他的家庭极其相似,他的父母分别是中国和泰国人,他们早年在日本相遇。而他在泰国出生之后,最终在中国成长,这个线索让他思考城市建筑、人与他所持记忆的关系,由此关联起了两个重要的空间——建筑空间与大脑。盘古银行20世纪90年代在上海外滩七号有了分行,而这座大楼早在1917年经历过火灾,他串联了两个事件,营造了一个灾难场景,这成为他创作的起点,火焰既是焚毁也是新生,因此新的记忆被构建起来,正如意大利历史学家克罗齐所说的——一切历史都是当代史,它正像一张白色画纸被逐渐添加内容。
此外,出于对古希腊神话的兴趣,这接洽了他脑海中一直盘旋着的伊卡洛斯的故事,伊卡洛斯与他的父亲代达罗斯,后者延续了生命,而前者则完成了壮举,在这些碎片中,火焰作为贯穿其中的自然材料,有着极强的与历史对话的力量,并且,它让人意识到事物往往不可掌控、以及为何触摸真理的手每每会灼伤,就像伊卡洛斯奔向太阳。
Tan Mr.Ladin’s residency works in Shanghai are inspired by his curiosity about his family’s history. He started with the fire of Bangkok Bank in 1917, trying to figure out to what extent the past and the present are intertwined. Bangkok Bank was founded by Chinese businessmen in Thailand after the Pacific War. Its development trajectory connects three Asian countries: China, Thailand, and Japan. Japan occupied Thailand during World War II and expelled foreign businessmen. Due to the defeat in the Pacific War, Japan withdrew from its occupation of Thailand, so local banks in Thailand began to emerge, which is very similar to his family. His parents are Chinese and Thai, respectively, and they met in Japan in their early years. After being born in Thailand, he eventually grew up in China. This clue made him think about the relationship between urban architecture, people, and the memories he holds, thus linking two important spaces – architectural space and the brain. Bangkok Bank had a branch in Shanghai Bund No. 7 in the 1990s, and the building had experienced a fire as early as 1917. He connected the two events and created a disaster scene, which became the starting point of his creation. The fire is both a burning and a rebirth, so new memories are constructed. As the Italian historian Croce said, all history is contemporary history, just like a piece of white drawing paper with content gradually added.
In addition, due to his interest in ancient Greek mythology, this is connected to the story of Icarus that has been hovering in his mind. Icarus and his father Daedalus, the latter continued life, while the former completed the feat. In these fragments, flame, as a natural material running through them, has a strong power to dialogue with history, and it makes people realize that things are often uncontrollable and why the hands that touch the truth are always burned, just like Icarus running towards the sun.
