前言 Introduction
Li Wei’s residency work in Shanghai continues her exploration of weaving as a conceptual and visual inspiration, further developing its integration into painting. In her process, she uses brushstrokes to create thread-like lines that interweave various abstract elements on the canvas. These threads are not merely compositional devices but also serve as a means of constructing a complex and multilayered visual space. In her work, weaving functions as a symbolic metaphor for feminine labor, a theme with deep historical significance, which embodies patience, resilience, and creativity for women’s work. By incorporating this symbolic act into the painting, Wei offers a new form of expression that reinterprets traditional painting through the lens of feminine labor.
In her work, the lines generated by brushstrokes function like threads in weaving, gradually layering to form intricate compositions. These lines often surround or intertwine with abstract bodily forms, which symbolize women’s physical experiences. These bodies frequently appear bound or restricted, reflecting the societal and psychological limitations contemporary women face. The blurred, indistinct body shapes are difficult to discern at first but are tightly intertwined with the surrounding threads, creating a sense of tension and disorientation. This sense of confusion is exactly what Li Wei seeks to explore in her paintings—the subtle and complex psychological state of contemporary women under societal pressures.
Wei’s works not only present visually complex compositions but also use lines and textures to metaphorically explore the multiple dimensions of women’s psychology. These lines, full of energy and tension, interact with the abstract bodily forms, producing an aesthetic that intertwines beauty with an underlying sense of oppression and restriction. She uses bright colors to enhance the emotional depth, while the complex compositions bring forth emotional conflict and contrast. Through this visual strategy, Wei examines how women navigate the collision between self-identity and external expectations, delving into the psychological weight and constraints they carry.
Throughout her work, Wei continuously engages with the tension between constraint and freedom. Through intricate compositions, she delicately conveys the struggles and confusion contemporary women experience on emotional and psychological levels. Those paintings are not only expressions of emotion but also serve as a profound reflection on the identity, societal roles, and psychological state of modern women. Through her art, Wei not only addresses individual female experiences but also explores the shared tension between their struggle and self-expression within the larger social environment.
