Written by Maria Stepanova in In Memory of Memory, “Memory is a fabric that constantly changes. We add new pieces to it and weave others out. It wears and tears. It renews and disappears.” Through Gao’s paintings on clothing and upholstery, she explores the intersection of personal and collective memory. Her work is a meditation on the fluidity and surreal quality of memory, as she uses found objects, photographs, and keepsakes to construct compositions that expose potentially undisclosed hints beyond the objects and imagery.
Gao’s drawn to the intimacy, heaviness, and structure of domestic life, and she uses these elements to reflect on broader social customs and cultural traditions.
